Stedelijk Museum Schiedam

A museum for modern en contemporary Dutch art located in Schiedam, the Netherlands.

The permanent collection consists of approximately 250 paintings by Karel Appel, Eugène Brands, Constant, Corneille, Jan Nieuwenhuys, Anton Rooskens and Theo Wolvecamp. They have all been members of Cobra. Also Jan Elburg and Lucebert, both poet and painter, are being counted among the collection.

The museum also regularly buys works by artists such as Henri Jacobs, Fransje Killaars, Koen Vermeule, Herman de Vries, Marlies Apple and many others to enrich the modern contemporary Dutch art collection.

The structure of the modern art collection runs through the following trends: first Cobra in the 50's, informal art and 'abstract expressionism', then systematic art and ’geometric’ abstraction in the sixties and in the seventies fundamental painting and on the paintings reflective tendencies. Works from these movements are purchased at the time that they were 'current'. Because the museum is still pursuing the target of 1954, purchases are made of young Dutch artists living in the Netherlands.

In addition to the modern art the museum holds more than 1,000 objects that tell something about the history of the city. An important part of this are the utensils that have to do with gin production, which is inseparable from Schiedam. These objects have been housed since 1996 in its own museum, the Gin Museum on the Long Harbour.
